BTW, if anyone can source Juan Cole's claim that "Sunni Arabs .. in Iraq .. are 20% at most" to any actual statistical evidence, I'd be grateful. (I once tried to email him but there was no reply.)

This RFE report says there has been no widely accepted census in almost 50 years in Iraq. Seems there were censuses in 1947,1957,1967,1977,1987,1997. Don't know why they are not considered credible. The 1997 census did not cover the three northern provinces of Dahuk, Irbil, and Sulaymaniyah, which constitute the territory of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
A brief overview of recent censuses says this about the 1997 one:
Until now(ie.8 Aug 2003), the results of the 1997 census had not been widely available, she added. The report included information on housing, occupancy, ownership by governorate, housing characteristics, age and sex distribution, geographic distribution, place of birth, children born and surviving, education and literacy, economic activity, births in the past year, and previous place and duration of residence. Also included were cross tabulations of demographic characteristics, such as age and sex and marital status by economic activity and education. Other topics covered in the census included residential status, source of income and disability.

The overall quality of the 1997 census appeared to be good, she said. There were some notable distinctions, however, and greater review of the data was required. Public dissemination of the data should encourage the assessment needed to evaluate the results of the census.
Religious affiliation is not listed among the data collected.
This NYT article contains some interesting information, they obviously have some 1997 data.
